Objectives and goals

In Greece today there is a significant number of dairy cows from which a large number of male calves are produced for fattening.

Beef cattle breeding is the most deficient branch of Greek animal production. It meets just 15-20% of national beef needs, including meat produced from calves imported for fattening. In Greece today there is a significant number of dairy cows from which a large number of male calves are produced for fattening. Unfortunately, the meat produced is generic without any differentiation and with a complete lack of standardization and “identity”, resulting in low commercial value. The object of the project is to analyze the current situation and fattening prospects of the calves produced in the dairy cow farms participating in the project.

These farms are representative of the majority of farms in the country and the proposed project is expected to lead to results with particular economic, social and environmental value for the entire sector. The project approaches the issue with actions in the fields of production, processing and strategy for the commercialization of the meat produced and has a direct and two-way relationship with the available animal material, the processing enterprises that guide and support the development, but also the resources available in the sector of animal feed as they are the building block for the sustainability of livestock units and the identity of the products produced.
